Part 2: Garden Winterization
We’re back to share tips on how you can protect your plants from the harsh winter weather.
- Prune Plants: Trim dead or damaged branches from trees and shrubs. Prune perennial plants to ground level after they’ve gone dormant.
- Mulch: Apply a layer of mulch to garden beds to insulate the soil and protect plant roots. Mulch also helps prevent weeds from growing.
- Wrap Tender Plants: If you have tender plants that won’t survive the winter, wrap them in burlap or other protective materials.
- Drain Irrigation Systems: If you have an irrigation system, drain and winterize it to prevent frozen pipes and damage.
- Bring Potted Plants Indoors: Move potted plants inside to protect them from freezing temperatures.
- Cover Sensitive Plants: Use frost blankets or cloths to cover sensitive plants during freezing nights.
- Store Garden Tools: Clean and store garden tools properly to prevent rust and damage.
- Winterize Lawn Equipment: Drain fuel from lawnmowers and other gas-powered equipment, and store them in a dry place.
- Feed Birds: Provide food and water for birds to help them through the winter months.
By taking these steps, you can help ensure that your garden is well-prepared for the winter season.
